The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal James K. Merrifield, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 30 November 1864, while serving with Company C, 88th Illinois Infantry, in action at Franklin, Tennessee. Corporal Merrifield captured two battle flags from the enemy and returned with them to his own lines.
