    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Second Lieutenant James Madison Drake, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 6 May 1864, while serving with Company D, 9th New Jersey Infantry, in action at Bermuda Hundred, Virginia. Second Lieutenant Drake commanded the skirmish line in the advance and held his position all day and during the night.
