Joe Carter

The Navy Cross is presented to Joe Carter, Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action north of Vierzy, France, July 18, 1918. Sergeant Carter gave a striking proof of bravery by following a tank with two Moroccans, in spite of an intense machine-gun fire. He captured sixty-three prisoners, one of them an officer.
