The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Quartermaster Sergeant Joel H. Lyman, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 19 September 1864, while serving with Company B, 9th New York Cavalry, in action at Winchester, Virginia. In an attempt to capture a Confederate flag Quartermaster Sergeant Lyman captured one of the enemy’s officers and brought him within the lines.
