John B. Stapansky
Silver Star
U.S. Army
World War II
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to John B. Stapansky, 01301897 INF, First Lieutenant, Company F, for gallantry in action on 27 May 1944 near Aprilia, Italy. After the capture and reorganization of the initial objective, First Lieutenant Stapansky’s platoon was subjected to heavy concentrations of mortar and artillery fire which were repeated at frequent intervals for a period of six hours. Although he was cut off from his commanding officer and friendly units, First Lieutenant Stapansky ordered his platoon to hold its ground and repel a reinforced company of enemy which was attempting to retake the captured position. Moving from squad to squad under the intense fire, First Lieutenant Stapansky inspired his men by his own calmness and courage to retain their position and to eventually capture the ground held by the enemy. First Lieutenant Stapansky’s tenacity and determined leadership reflect the high traditions of the Army of the United States.
