    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant John Brosnan, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 17 June 1864, while serving with Company E, 164th New York Infantry, in action at Petersburg, Virginia. Sergeant Brosnan rescued a wounded comrade who lay exposed to the enemy’s fire, receiving a severe wound in the effort.
