The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John C. Boggs, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Soissons, France, July 21, 1918. Second Lieutenant Boggs displayed exceptional personal bravery and initiative by volunteering to take charge of a machine gun and crew, protecting an exposed flank with them and dispersing an enemy counterattack.
