The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John C. Burgin, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Romagne, France, October 14, 1918. Seriously wounded while advancing with his platoon under terrific shell and machine-gun fire, Sergeant Burgin refused treatment and led his men on to the objective.
