The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant John Ezra Buffington, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 2 April 1865, while serving with Company C, 6th Maryland Infantry, in action at Petersburg, Virginia. Sergeant Buffington was the first enlisted man of the 3d Division to mount the parapet of the enemy’s line.
