John F. Smith

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John F. Smith, Private, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Machine-Gun Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, October 4, 1918. During a heavy enemy counter-barrage Private Smith was engaged as a runner. In the execution of his duty he displayed exceptional bravery, carrying messages through intense shell fire, falling severely wounded after his fourth journey.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to John F. Smith, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 3d Battalion, 359th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 10 January 1945. Lieutenant Colonel Smith’s intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 90th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
