The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Sergeant John H. Brown, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 19 May 1863, while serving with Company A, 47th Ohio Infantry, in action at Vicksburg, Mississippi. First Sergeant Brown voluntarily carried a verbal message from Colonel A. C. Parry to General Hugh Ewing through a terrific fire and in plain view of the enemy.
