    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal John Henry Moffitt, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 27 June 1862, while serving with Company C, 16th New York Infantry, in action at Gaines Mill, Virginia. Corporal Moffitt voluntarily took up the regimental colors after several Color Bearers had been shot down and carried them until himself wounded.
