Under the provisions of Army Regulations 600-45, as amended, a Silver Star Medal is awarded to: John N. Lowden 01692500 CAV, Second Lieutenant, 45th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop, Mechanized. For gallantry in action on 4 November 1944 near Thiaville, France. When a strong enemy attack supported by armor forced his reconnaissance platoon to withdraw from its exposed positions, Second Lieutenant Lowden remained under heavy enemy fire to lead his men in the move and to direct his vehicles over the most advantageous route. During this action, the leader of another platoon was seriously wounded. In spite of the mortar and artillery fire that was falling in the area, Second Lieutenant Lowden went to the officer’s assistance, rendering first aid and carrying him to a position from which he could be evacuated. At the point of assembly, Second Lieutenant Lowden reorganized the wounded man’s platoon as well as his own. His gallant conduct was largely responsible for the successful move To the two platoons and is in keeping with the high traditions of the Army of the United States.
