The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John S. Bruce, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Trugny, France, July 23, 1918. Despite the fact that he had been wounded, Lieutenant Bruce continued in command of his machine-gun platoon, firing the gun himself when the crew was depleted, until he received a second wound.
