    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to John V. Bridgford, Private, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 51st Company, 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action south of Mouzon, France, November 11, 1918. Private Bridgford delivered an important message from his company to regimental headquarters. In the performance of this mission, exposed to heavy machine-gun and artillery fire, and in full view of enemy machine gunners, he swam the Meuse river. In spite of the great danger, he delivered the message as directed.
