John W. Hoffman

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 8, 1918 (amended by act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star for gallantry in action.  Staff Sergeant Hoffman distinguished himself by heroic actions on 26 November 1967, while serving as platoon sergeant for Company A, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry on a search and destroy operation in the Republic of Vietnam.  As Sergeant Hoffman and his platoon were advancing through thick undergrowth they were suddenly confronted with an intense volume of hostile automatic weapons and small arms fire.  Sergeant Hoffman immediately retaliated with effective fire into the enemy positions.  In order to provide maximum effective fire he repeatedly exposed himself to the withering enemy fire.  With complete disregard for his own safety he rushed into the killing zone to render aid to a wounded comrade.  He fearlessly moved the soldier to safety, simultaneously laying down a protective base of fire to cover his hazardous movement.  Sergeant Hoffman then rejoined his platoon and played a major role in routing the enemy and completely destroying their fortifications.  Sergeant Hoffman’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
