Home Town: Scipio, OK
General Orders No. No. 10, W.D., 1920
The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Joseph A. Boyd, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, France, October 12 and 14, 1918. Sergeant Boyd returned to his company on October 11, and due to his poor physical condition on account of wounds received in June he was directed to remain with the kitchen. Upon hearing of the heavy casualties of officers and noncommissioned officers in his company he voluntarily joined his company and showed great initiative in leading a platoon in the attack of October 12. On October 14, while gallantly leading his platoon in attack, Sergeant Boyd was killed by shell fire.
