The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Joseph F. Boughan, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action north of Verdun, France, October 27, 1918. While advancing with the first wave Private Boughan, with another soldier, attacked a machine-gun nest and killed two of the crew. He accomplished this feat only after a hand-to-hand encounter, in which he was severely wounded.
