Josephus Amberg Robbins
Silver Star
U.S. Navy
World War II
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Josephus Amberg Robbins (NSN: 0-63196), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S.TAUSSIG (DD-746) during continuous enemy air attacks on 15 and 16 April 1945. While in an exposed position as northern picket for a Carrier Task Group operating off Okinawa Gunto, the TAUSSIG shot down unassisted, four enemy planes and assisted in shooting down another. Two planes were shot down at night in full radar control and two planes during the day while making diving attacks on the ship. By skillful ship-handling and cool judgement in the face of sudden danger he not only fought his ship brilliantly but contributed materially to the successful defense of the Task Group. His courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
