    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Joshua D. Brown, Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Verdun, France, October 14 – 16, 1918. On October 14 while commanding a platoon in the Bois de Consenvoye, north of Verdun, Sergeant Brown was wounded. He refused to be sent to the hospital, and continued in command of his platoon, doing excellent work, until October 16, when he was again severely wounded and carried from the field.
