The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Karl A. Brooks, Private First Class, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company A, 135th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 1 July 1944, in Italy. Despite his own wounds, Private First Class Brooks determinedly and single-handedly held off a superior enemy German force in order to save seven of his wounded comrades.
