The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Kenneth Birchfield, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Cunel, France, October 14, 1918. Private Birchfield advanced alone upon a machine gun, which was holding up the platoon 150 yards in advance of his company, killed the gunner with the butt of his rifle, and forced two other gunners to surrender.
