The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Leo Heinzmann, Corporal, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Romanovka, Siberia, June 25, 1919. When his platoon was completely surrounded by the enemy Corporal Heinzmann volunteered to carry a message through the enemy’s lines to the nearest American troops at Novo-Nezhino, six miles away. Corporal Heinzmann succeeded in getting through the enemy’s lines, reached the nearest American forces, and returning with reinforcement for his platoon.
