U.S. Army
Lloyd Hunt, Technical Sergeant, Company “K”, 168th Infantry Regiment, for gallantry in action on 30 May, 1944 in the vicinity of Lanuvio, Italy. Engaged in fierce combat with the enemy, Sergeant Hunt assumed command of the platoon after his platoon leader became a casualty. Sergeant Hunt led the assault by his platoon up Hill 225. The men advanced the reverse slope of the hill when they were confronted by perfectly concealed German entrenchments firing machine guns, rifle grenades, and rifles at a distance of thirty-five yards. Sergeant Hunt, crawling from squad to squad withdrew his men successfully to the crest of another hill where he organized a base of fire. Spying two snipers, he disposed of them in quick order. Finding two wounded men, he rendered them first-aid and assisted them in quick order. The withering fire of the enemy had not abated while Sergeant Hunt was doing this valiant work. Receiving further order to clear the area for friendly artillery concentrations, Sergeant Hunt withdrew his men another five hundred yards. Learning of a seriously wounded man left behind, he returned and arrived in time to comfort the dying man. Sergeant Hunt’s great courage in combat and devotion to a fellow soldier reflects high honor upon himself and the traditions of the United States Army.
