The Navy Cross is presented to Merwin H. Silverthorn, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near St. Etienne, France, October 4, 1918. Second Lieutenant Silverthorn carried an important message to his battalion commander and returned with instructions at a critical time through heavy machine-gun and shell fire.
