    Vietnam War

For Gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam 4 April 1969. Specialist Flood distinguished himself while serving as a medical aidman for Company E, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry, near Fire Base Veghel, Republic of Vietnam. At approximately 1300 hours on the cited date, the Reconnaissance Platoon of Company E was advancing in a line formation on suspected enemy bunker positions. As the platoon attempted to cross an open area, enemy soldiers fired on the friendly troops. In the ensuing battle, one American was badly wounded and, with complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Flood ran amidst enemy fire to where the man lay. He administered first aid to the casualty and attempted to move him to safety. As he struggled to move the wounded man out of range of the enemy small arms fire, he too fell wounded. He continued to give encouragement to the wounded man, but soon succumbed to his wounds. Specialist Flood’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
