The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Corporal Miles James, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 30 September 1864, while serving with Company B, 36th U.S. Colored Infantry, in action at Chapin’s Farm, Virginia. Having had his arm mutilated, making immediate amputation necessary, Corporal James loaded and discharged his piece with one hand and urged his men forward; this within 30 yards of the enemy’s works.
