Norman J. Pelland
Silver Star
World War II
U.S. Army
Headquarters, 4th Infantry Division, APO 4
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress on July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star medal to Norman J. Pelland, 31388936, Private, Headquarters Battery, 44th Field Artillery Battalion for gallantry in action in the vicinity of Le Mesnil Herman, France on 29 July 1944. Private Pelland undoubtedly saved the lives of two men who were wounded during an air raid on their bivouac area at night. The first planes that flew over the area dropped flares and the succeeding planes dropped bombs which caused some casualties. One flare, while still burning, fell into a half-track vehicle loaded with ammunition, setting the vehicle on fire and causing the ammunition to explode. Two men had taken cover under the half-track from the bombing and were injured by the first explosion of the ammunition. When Private Pelland heard them call for assistance, he disregarded the danger of falling bombs and exploding ammunition and went to their assistance. He moved them to a place of safety, making two trips to the burning vehicle to do so. The courage and consideration for others displayed by Private Pelland reflect great credit upon him and upon the military service.
