Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 370 (October 4, 1945)

The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal to First Lieutenant Norman Winderman, 01 050 519, Infantry, Assistant Personnel Officer, 15th Infantry Regiment (then Company “A”, 275th Infantry Regiment). At 0900 hours, on 3 January 1945, near Dambach, Germany, Lieutenant Winderman, although painfully wounded, advanced over 100 yards toward a well located enemy machine gun nest to liquidate the enemy’s defense and enable his men to withdraw from out-flanked positions. Under heavy machine gun and rifle fire that barely missed him, he inched his way to within twenty yards of the hostile strongpoint and hurled three fragmentation grenades, killing the three-man crew. Although dizzy with pain, he refused to be evacuated, but remained with his men for eight hours until reinforcements arrived.
