Bernier, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 5th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near Chateau-Thierry, France, June 6, 1918. Exposing himself to very heavy concentrated machine-gun and rifle fire, Lieutenant Bernier rushed ahead and broke down a strong wire fence, thereby preventing a delay in his progress and consequent exposure of his men to fire.
