By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Paul Donovan (ASN: 1387516), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Donovan distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action at Chipilly Ridge, France, 19 August 1918, in alone entering an enemy dugout and capturing five prisoners.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Paul J. Donovan, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action at Chipilly Ridge, France, August 9, 1918. Private Donovan, while exposed to machine-gun and artillery fire, went forward and killed an enemy sniper. Later, while moving forward to the attack, he entered single-handed a dugout and captured five of the enemy.
