The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Colonel Philip Sidney Post, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on December 15 – 16, 1864, while serving with 59th Illinois Infantry, in action at Nashville, Tennessee. Colonel Post led his brigade in an attack upon a strong position under a terrific fire of grape, canister, and musketry; was struck down by a grapeshot after he had reached the enemy’s works.
