General Orders No. 11417. Headquarters 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile). (20 September 1970)
By direction of the President of the United States under the provisions of the Act of Congress approved 25 July 1963. The Silver Star medal is presented to Randy L. Shaner, Sergeant, United States Army. For gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 May 1970. Sergeant Shaner distinguished himself while serving as a team leader in Company B, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 501st Infantry, during combat operations in Thua Thien Province, Republic of Vietnam. While on a reconnaissance patrol, Sergeant Shaner’s squad came under intense small arms fire from a well-entrenched enemy force. Realizing that the squad leader could no longer control the squad, Sergeant Shaner immediately assumed command and directed his men’s suppressive fire. Subjecting himself to the intense barrage, Sergeant Shaner called for and directed aerial rocket artillery. Maneuvering from position to position, he led the assault until the enemy positions were silenced. Sergeant Shaner’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
