The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to S Sgt Raymond A. McKenna, 31067702, (then Tec 5), Med Det, 116th Inf, U.S. Army for gallantry in action against the enemy in Normandy, France. At 1700 hours on 6 June 1944, on the beach near *****, S Sgt McKenna, with complete disregard for his own mortar, and artillery fire while carrying the wounded from the perilous surf to the protection of a nearby overhanging cliff. Using this partly sheltered area as an aid station, S Sgt McKenna promptly gave medical treatment, using improvised dressings consisting of sterile pads and strips of clothing taken from the casualties, since all medical jeeps and supplies in his section had been destroyed during the landing. For over five hours, S Sgt McKenna supervised the operation of this hastily set up aid station until evacuation could be accomplished by returning craft after dark. The prompt and courageous actions taken by S Sgt McKenna undoubtedly saved many lives and reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Service.
