The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Torpedoman’s Mate Raymond O. Saunders, United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy in the line of his profession as Chief Torpedoman’s Mate and Senior Petty Officer in the U.S.S. PLUNGER (SS-179), during four successful war patrols of that submarine in enemy controlled waters. His skill and devotion to duty in maintaining the torpedo armament in a perpetual state of readiness for action contributed directly to the success of his boat. As Senior Petty Officer on board, his excellent judgment was of direct assistance to the Commanding Officer in maintaining the high spirit and fighting efficiency of his submarine. His conduct throughout these four patrols was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
