    U.S. Army

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Richard J. Moulton (11131632), Sergeant (then Private First Class), U.S. Army, for gallantry in action against an armed enemy of the United States. In his capacity as light machine gun squad leader, Sergeant Moulton displayed outstanding qualities. In the attack on Kamp, Germany, on 24 March 1945, the platoon to which he was attached became pinned down by enemy small arms and panzerfaust fire. One man was killed and two were wounded. Sergeant Moulton immediately put his gun into action. So deadly accurate was his fire that he succeeded in destroying an enemy machine pistol position, killing the gunner and wounding three more of the enemy. Continuing his devastating fire he forced the surrender of five Germans who had been manning a machine gun. Sergeant Moulton’s gallantry in action and devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and his training as a soldier.
