The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Robert B. Dexter, Captain (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 406th Infantry Regiment, 102d Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces from 23 February 1945 to 3 March 1945, in Germany. Captain Dexter expertly organized an outstanding defense and led his rifle company in a series of furious attacks in a manner so courageous that his men were inspired to great success despite the intense artillery and mortar fire they were forced to penetrate. Attacking at the head of the riflemen, Captain Dexter, by his superior leadership and outstanding courage, prevented many casualties to his unit and was responsible for inflicting heavy losses upon the enemy. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 102d Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
