Silver Star
U.S. Army
World War II
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress on July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star medal to Robert C. Weed, Second Lieutenant, 19th Engineer Regiment, for gallantry in action. On 19 and 20 February 1943, at Kasserine Pass, Tunisia, Second Lieutenant Weed, after another platoon of his company had been driven out of position by enemy fire, received permission from his company commander to lead a group of volunteers to retake the position. Despite heavy machine gun and rifle fire, he, accompanied by 5 volunteers, succeeded in driving out a 10 man hostile enemy patrol. He personally killed two. His companions wounded and killed several others. Later, due to overwhelming enemy reinforcements, Lieutenant Weed withdrew his group. Despite heavy enemy fire he managed to cut an enemy telephone line. The action of Lieutenant Weed is an inspiring example of courage, initiative and leadership.
