General Orders 269. Headquarters 63d Infantry Division (19 June 1945)
The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Robert E. Hudson, 34823672, Private First Class, Infantry, Company “C”, 254th Infantry Regiment, for gallantry in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Hohebach, Germany. During an attack, Company “C” was pinned down by fire from two enemy machine guns. Private First Class Hudson, the lead scout, continued to move forward, firing his rifle at the first machine gun. About twenty-five yards from the enemy position, he was forced to take cover in a ditch, but continued forward until he was within five yards of the enemy gun. From this position he threw two hand grenades, killing the members of the first gun crow. He then opened fire with his rifle on the second gun and succeeded in keeping the gunners pinned down until the company could reach cover in a nearby woods and continue on its mission. Private First Class Hudson’s magnificent courage and devotion to duty in the face of enemy fire are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
