The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Robert H. Donaghue, Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 82d Company, 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action in the Bois de Belleau, northwest of Chateau-Thierry, France, November 4, 1918. While his company was in support on the attacking company, communication was temporarily lost in the darkness. After all the runners had become casualties, Private Donaghue volunteered and succeeded in establishing liaison, pushing forward through the severe machine-gun and artillery fire despite the fact that he was painfully wounded soon after starting on his mission.
