Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 111 (December 22, 1944)

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Robert H. Stumpf, Lieutenant Colonel, 020707, 39th Infantry, who distinguished himself by gallantry in action against the enemy on 5 September 1944 in the vicinity of Anhee, Belgium. Moving forward alone on a reconnaissance of the Meuse River for a crossing site, Colonel Stumpf observed an enemy patrol approaching him. Skillfully evading the enemy group, he continued on his reconnaissance until he had accomplished his voluntary mission. He notified all Company Commanders of his plans and then personally led the Battalion to the site he had selected. Successfully making the assault crossing of the Meuse River, Colonel Stumpf repeatedly exposed himself to heavy enemy fire to effectively maneuver and deploy his companies. Colonel Stumpf’s aggressive leadership, devotion to duty, and courageous actions contributed materially to the success of the operations and were a credit to himself and to the Armed Forces of the United States.
