Headquarters, First U.S. Army, General Orders No. 31 (July 1, 1944)

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Robert J. Houston (12201925), Sergeant, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company H, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, in action against enemy forces on 12 June 1944, in France. The advance of Sergeant Houston’s company was halted by heavy enemy machine gun and cannon fire. With complete disregard for his safety, Sergeant Houston moved out to an exposed position, set up, sighted and fired a 60-mm. mortar. His action drew the fire of the enemy and permitted his company to advance. Despite the intense enemy fire directed at him, Sergeant Houston remained at his position and destroyed the enemy guns. His intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 101st Airborne Division, and the United States Army.
