    The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Robert S. Cochrane, Chief Pharmacist’s Mate, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action near St. Etienne, France, October 3 – 4, 1918. Chief Pharmacist’s Mate Cochrane continued to dress wounded when the area in which he was working was swept by machine-gun fire. He was an example of coolness to all during 48 hours of continuous shell fire, never hesitating to expose himself to danger when assistance was needed.
