The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Roy A. Bess, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Beaufort, France, November 4, 1918. Although wounded by machine-gun fire, Private Bess refused first aid, and continued in the engagement for two days without treatment.
