The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain Samuel E. Pingree, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 16 April 1862, while serving with Company F, 3d Vermont Infantry, in action at Lee’s Mills, Virginia. Captain Pingree gallantly led his company across a wide, deep creek, drove the enemy from the rifle pits, which were within two yards of the farther bank, and remained at the head of his men until a second time severely wounded.
