The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Scott Martin Johnston, Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the 6th Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F. in action near Vierzy, France, July 19, 1918. With a small detachment, Second Lieutenant Johnston charged a machine-gun nest and captured a German gun which was inflicting severe losses on the American lines. Although seriously wounded, he stayed with his men until ordered to a dressing station by his company commander.
