The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Silas E. Bowman, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Premont, France, October 7 – 9, 1918. For three successive days Private Bowman carried messages over ground swept by machine-gun fire and heavy shelling. He disregarded personal safety, and was instrumental in establishing liaison with units in the vicinity.
