Simon SIMON Ramirez

The President of the United States, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, has awarded the Silver Star Medal to Sergeant Simon Ramirez for gallantry in action involving close combat with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Sergeant Ramirez distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 22 May 1969 while serving as a Squad Leader with Company C, 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division, on a blocking force mission in Giao Duc District. Sergeant Ramirez’ platoon was concealed in a good blocking position when they suddenly heard noise in the heavy underbrush ahead. Sergeant Ramirez climbed to the highest area available to observe the movement to the front, and almost immediately the fire fight broke out. Disregarding his own safety, Sergeant Ramirez remained in his exposed position, directing the fire of his men. Though a much safer position was always available, he remained in his place until the enemy was defeated. Sergeant Ramirez’ extraordinary heroism in close combat is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
