The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star Medal to Souvenir W. Yonkers, 32806450, Technical Sergeant, Infantry, Company “G”, *** Infantry Regiment, for gallantry in action on 17 February 1945, in the vicinity of Neunkirch, France. Learning that the security of his platoon was greatly endangered by the position of an enemy machine gun emplacement to the rear, Sergeant Yonkers quickly picked two men and led them in a ferocious assault on the machine gun nest, killing the gunners. His quick thinking and courageous action secured the position of his platoon, allowing them to take their objective. His utter disregard for personal safety and outstanding gallantry are in accord with the finest traditions of military services.
