By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Stanley H. Berry (ASN: 306727), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Private Berry distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Battery D, 76th Field Artillery, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near Chateau-Thierry, France, 14 – 15 July 1918, while repairing telephone lines under artillery fire.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Stanley H. Berry, Private, U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in action near Chateau-Thierry, France, July 14 – 15, 1918. During an intensive hostile bombardment, when all telephone lines had been cut off by shell fire, Private Berry voluntarily went out and continued to repair the forward lines until killed. His heroic conduct and self-sacrifice were an inspiration to all his comrades at a most trying time.
